Best Cities for Tech Workers in 2026: Salary vs Cost

Where tech salaries go furthest: comparing purchasing power in 15 major tech hubs.

Top 5 by Purchasing Power

1. Austin, TX — $165K avg salary, low cost = highest purchasing power. 2. Raleigh, NC — $145K salary, very low cost. 3. Denver, CO — $155K salary, moderate cost. 4. Seattle, WA — $180K salary, no state income tax offsets high rent. 5. Remote (from low-cost area) — Bay Area salary, anywhere cost.

Worst Value

San Francisco and New York offer the highest raw salaries ($200K+) but the lowest purchasing power after rent ($3,500+/mo) and state/city taxes. A $200K SF salary equals about $130K in Austin after cost adjustments. Remote work has been the biggest equalizer in tech compensation.
