World Happiness Rankings 2026: Nordic Dominance Continues
Finland tops the happiness index for the 9th year. But what exactly makes a country "happy"?
Top 10
1. Finland, 2. Denmark, 3. Iceland, 4. Switzerland, 5. Netherlands, 6. Norway, 7. Sweden, 8. Luxembourg, 9. New Zealand, 10. Austria. Nordic countries dominate because they combine high social trust, strong safety nets, work-life balance, and low corruption.
Surprising Findings
GDP alone doesn't predict happiness. Costa Rica (#12) outranks the US (#23) and Japan (#51) despite having a fraction of their GDP. The key factors are: social support (having someone to count on), freedom to make life choices, generosity, and low perceived corruption. Money matters up to about $75K/year — after that, it has diminishing returns on happiness.
